There are many things that one must remember and know when planning to conceive—the right position, medications, consulting the doctor, precautions about diet, and so much more.

So are you planning to have a baby? Well, babies are beautiful and change ones life completely. They add so much love and warmth in ones life. But, one big question that you should ask yourself before conceiving is that if you are ready to take up this immense responsibility. Not just you, your partner too must be ready. There are many things that you should know when you wish to conceive. 

 A Checklist of Things to Do When You Want to Conceive

 1.  Plan a visit to your doctor about 3 months before you want to conceive.

There are several tests the doctor might suggest in an effort to secure you are preparing your body for conceive and pregnancy.  If you’re on birth control he will give you information about how much time it will take for it to clear from your system if it’s the pill.   If you’re using a birth prevention method that he needs to remove, you can discuss when he needs to take it out.  If you’re on birth control pills he can tell you how long it takes to clear your system and the probability of conception the longer you’re off the pill.  He will also discuss giving you Folic acid as it decreases chances for neural tube defects. Schedule a time when your husband can go with you.

 2.  The doctor may ask questions about your menstrual cycle.

If your cycle isn’t regular or doesn’t occur every month this can cause difficulty in conception.  When you ovulate your body releases an egg and it goes into the fallopian tubes and awaits fertilization.  Cycles for release of the egg vary in woman. It’s helpful to use calendars and timing charts that assist to tell when you are ovulating. Count from the first day you start bleeding to day 14.  The optimum time from the first day of your menses can be different from 14 and that’s why you keep an ovulating chart.  There are only about 24 hours that you can conceive during your cycle.

 3.  Have the doctor verify you have no infections, especially vaginal infection.

 4.  Check your immunizations for rubella and chicken pox.  If you need them it takes 3 months for the vaccines to become effective.  These immunizations are steps to prevent birth defects.
